Keith MacKenzie grew up in the Tampa Bay area of Florida (the town of Seminole) and caught the rave bug at 17 when his older brother took him to his first party in 1995. He first started going out in Orlando's house-and-progressive scene, but gravitated to breakbeat, beat-matched his first records on his brother's decks around 19, and played his first club gig from nine to eleven at Turtle Club in Clearwater. Early support from Florida legend DJ Icey, who co-signed and released his music, helped boost him.
He worked at record store Luscious Records and then breakbeat distributor Subsonic, which issued his first records including "Float" and "Music Takes Us Higher." Around 2004 he founded Eleven Eleven (1111), now past 150 releases, signing artists like DJ Fix, Sporty-O, and Whiskey Pete.
Now based in Chicago, MacKenzie is known for his long partnership with MC Sporty-O ("Guest List," the "International Wingman" album) and his trap alias Smookielson (with Darcy and DJ Fix), whose stripped-down "Club Action" remix was played by Skrillex and Baauer. He continues touring internationally and experimenting with UKG-tinged hybrid breaks.
